The "Tsunami" hits Konga, 80 Sacked

80 Konga Staff Sacked
Two days ago, the recent tsunami that has hit some companies in recent times hit KONGA, one of the biggest online shopping malls.
80 workers were relieved of their duties without plausible explanation from the management. However, unlike VISAFONE whose staff are being re-employed in batches by the new company owner, MTN, the affected staff of Konga may not be that lucky. The level of unemployment seems to be on the rise far too early this year, and may get worse within the next few months. I heard from a reliable source that the tsunami would soon hit one of the biggest banks in Nigeria.

This recent occurrence leaves nothing to be desired in the corporate world, but as we say, "Man must wack, so man must work", Good news is, as some companies are letting go of staff, some others are employing new staff. So let's keep the faith up and do not lose guard because you are currently unemployed. A few pieces of advice I'll give with regards to this are:

1. Keep searching and applying for new job vacancy postings every day.

2. Keep an open mind about the company you are applying to, a company may look "small" but that same company would be more than capable to pay all your bills and provide health benefits for you. The size of a company has deceived many people into believing that that's all that matters. This factor should not be your only determinant of how well you'll get paid or how secure your job would be. Take Schlumberger, Zenith bank, Visafone, Konga etc, for example, their sizes didn't provide enough security for their staff, rather they were strongly affected by the economic crisis and had to cut down on their staff.
The companies that you think are irrelevant and "small" are sometimes the ones that have you better covered.

3. Keep yourself busy by taking relevant courses (Computer courses, project management courses etc). If you can, do volunteer work, as this would be a useful addition in your CV.

4. Before you think of applying for a job, "package" your CV well, check your grammar and do not make a disorganised market shopping list and call that a CV. With what you submit, you will be evaluated, and the first glance at your CV may not get you the desired attention that you need. Your CV is your key to the interview room, fix it properly. I'll be doing a post on "Your CV, Your Everything" soon, Stay tuned!!!
